Visiting Some Old Friends

I try to make it down to New York City a couple times a year since many of my friends live there now.  It also gives me an excuse to try new restaurants (which I will expand upon in separate posts), do some shopping, and go to art museums.

Friday night consisted of dinner at Má Pêche (reviewed here) and a drink and dessert at the Peninsula.  I was staying at the Millenium Hilton since I had a reservation to visit the September 11th Memorial on Saturday morning.

I normally shied away from visiting the World Trade Center site since it seems kind of morbid and didn't seem right to treat the place like a tourist attraction.  The last time I have even been in that part of Manhattan was about 8 years ago when the only reasonably-priced hotel I could find was the Club Quarters.  I didn't understand why so many people treated a place where so many died the same way they would treat Times Square.  Sort of how I don't understand the visits to former concentration camps in Europe, but that is a story for another time.

The morning that I went to visit was bright, windy, and cold.

The main reason I went was personal; I went to visit an old friend.  Her name was Saranya Srinuan.  I knew where to look for her name in the memorial, but they did have kiosks available to search the database in case you didn't remember the location.

We took a number of classes together and were in the same major.  She wasn't a very close friend of mine at BU, but we knew each other and would talk if we bumped into each other.  She was smart and incredibly friendly, almost always smiling.  When I first found out that she was one of the victims that day, I was incredibly heartbroken that such a great person with such a promising future was taken away so soon.  With the memorial now in place, I felt it was time enough to pay my respects.

Seeing her name on the memorial was a little tough.  No, I didn't cry, but I came pretty close.
